Life Without a Phone…for a Little Bit

July 15, 2021 - Yesterday I was at my favorite coffee shop on Church Street, The Cosmic Grind, and I was sitting outside. Next to me was a man woman sitting together, and the woman had a phone setup on a tripod that pointed at her. I was thinking that maybe they had a friend they were talking to or something over video. The man left to go inside and the woman looked over and smiled, so I asked her about the phone, just to make conversation. She said she was on vacation from New York City so she was recording the experience. When her friend came back, they got up and walked down Church Street, with her carrying her phone in front of her the whole time, recording herself on vacation.
This experience made me happy that I have decided lately that when I go to town I have been leaving my phone behind. Like the woman, I do sometimes feel like I need to record special experiences, but what I find most of the time is that instead of fully having the special experience, I’m dealing with capturing it. And, when I go to town, those couple of photos or videos I don’t take, or the email I don’t read until later, is worth missing out on for the fabulous experience of being present.
So, hey, try it out! Not just not having your phone in your pocket, but not having your phone AT ALL is fantastically wonderful. Give it go…I bet you’ll like it. :-)
